Letting every bag of coffee arrive and be brewed at its best
Highlights
- 01Roast date and flavor window on every bag
- 02Small, sealed 250 g bags
The project
Northbean is a brand, packaging and online store concept, for desktop and mobile, we built from scratch at Bemorex for a specialty coffee roaster in Bilbao that sells by subscription in Spain. It isn't a real brand: it's a complete design exercise, done with the same rigor we bring to client work.
The Challenge
Roasted coffee loses most of its freshness in the first month, and methanethiol, one of its fresh-roast aromas, drops to about 30% of its initial level within eight days. Ground coffee degasses about twice as fast as whole beans (Specialty Coffee Association literature review, 2013). Yet most shops still ship 1 kg bags on a fixed 30-day delivery, regardless of how much coffee each home drinks.
What we designed
A brand and a store built so coffee gets brewed inside its flavor window: the bag says when it was roasted and when it's at its best, and the subscription is sized by what you drink, not by the calendar.
- A bag label that prints the roast date and a flavor window: resting, best days and when aroma fades
- A subscription sized by cups, not months: 2 cups a day means two sealed 250 g bags every 16 days
- One label color per origin, from Bolivia to Ethiopia
- We roast your order: tracking starts at the roaster
- On mobile, a day-by-day view of your bag, V60 recipes and delivery adjustments: away four days, it arrives four days later
- Dark mode
The same bag, day by day
Why print the flavor window on the bag and not just on the website? Because the bag is what's in front of you every morning. The label does the app's job without asking you to open it. Photos: Unsplash; bags and labels are our own design.
